Intersection improvements at developments
throughout wisconsin
Intersection improvements can
be required when there is development along the corridor of a major
arterial highway. Often the roadway's governing agency will first
require a developer to perform a Traffic Impact Analysis (TIA) for
the proposed site. The TIA helps planners understand how much
traffic will be generated by the new development. Whether
the development is residential, business, commercial or industrial,
in most cases, it will create additional traffic for the existing
highway. As a result, off-site modifications might be needed
to existing intersections within the project corridor. These TIA
intersection improvements typically include adding turn-lanes and
driving lanes, extending existing turn-lanes to provide more storage,
and widening curb radii to allow truck turns. In some cases, installation of a traffic signal is also required.
These relatively minor geometric changes can become complex
when right-of-way is needed, when private utilities are affected,
or when multiple reviewing agencies have a stake in the off-site
improvements.
