Marquette Interchange Lighting

Kapur & Associates provided all freeway lighting design for the completed Marquette Interchange, including the North, Clybourn, South, West and Core contracts. Kapur also assisted the City of Milwaukee with local street lighting design.
The new Marquette Interchange was completed in 2008 on time and under budget. Construction cost for the lighting was over $11 million. The design included over 122 miles of wiring, 1113 luminaries, and 17 power distribution centers, as well as lighting of three tunnels.
Challenges included providing economical temporary lighting, coordinating with multiple stages of construction for multiple contracts, and providing lighting where conventional types were unsuitable. A tunnel type fixture (ProBeam) with a new type DOT pole was used -- a traffic directional light designed to focus its beam in the same direction as the headlights below.
