Zilber Park
The Pabst Brewery Redevelopment
Milwaukee, WI
A sustainable urban theme is expressed throughout the Pabst Brewery redevelopment. From storm water control and wire mesh screens within the parking lots, to the gabion wall and snow benches within the pocket park, many concepts are custom designed.
Rubber lined bioswales capture parking lot runoff, preventing infiltration and migration of contaminants located on the site. The storm water filters through recycled concrete, vegetation, engineered soil, and gravel before its collection in an underground storage area, where its dispersal rate into the city sewer is controlled. A steel and gabion structure filled with natural Wisconsin granite rip rap separates the surface lot from urban green space. In the winter, water trickles over the wall, creating a constantly changing ice sculpture.
Vegetation was chosen for urban tolerance and year round interest. A bronze statue of the development’s visionary stands welcoming all Milwaukeeans.
