Menomonee Falls Dam Consulting

Kapur is recognized by the Wisconsin DNR as a Dam Consultant. We have years of specialized experience in inspection, design engineering, planning and helping owner’s maintain dam structure and function. Dam structures can be costly to maintain if not properly managed, so it is important for dam owner’s to keep up with necessary efforts as needed. The Village of Menomonee Falls contracted Kapur to provide a variety of services to help protect the dam located off of Main Street (State Highway 74). This dam has a very rich and meaningful history to this community. Kapur completed an Operation and Maintenance Plan and Emergency Action Plan in cooperation with the Village and DNR. In addition Kapur completed an inspection of the larger structural components of the dam including the dam structure, spillway, dam gates, upstream impoundment area, and downstream areas within the Menomonee River. Improvements were recommended and carried out by a contractor with very little noticeable effect to the surrounding community.

Kapur and the Village realized there was an opportunity to make water quantity and quality improvements to Mill Pond which is impounded by the dam. Kapur worked with the Village to conduct sediment sampling, provided engineering plans and obtained necessary DNR and U.S ACOE permits to allow for removal of sediment build-up behind the dam. Drawdown of water and dredging within the impoundment was conducted over winter months. During this time there was less impact to the local community who use the pond for recreational opportunities (during open water months). Additionally winter construction did not result in measurable impacts to aquatic life and helped save on overall construction costs due to improved access and materials management as the ground and sediment disposed of was frozen. This seemingly complicated project was well managed by ensuring regular communication by all project stakeholders, excelling in project deadlines and providing cost-feasible options that resulted in long-term solutions to maintain the integrity of the dam structure. Solutions will help the Village continue with future monitoring and maintenance to help ensure the Village’s focal point remains for many years to come.
